Shear monitoring
SmartSHEAR – In-place inclinometer
Understand where and how bedding planes are shearing with monitoring that identifies the depth, direction and magnitude of lateral movement.
Build a clearer picture of shear movement within the rockmass. SmartSHEAR uses pre-calibrated MEMS tiltmeters in jointed bays to calculate lateral displacement along two orthogonal axes. The resulting profiles help site teams identify active shear horizons and track how movement develops over time. The instrument is installed in open boreholes, with spring-loaded anchors centralising and locking each bay in place without grout or resin. Customisable bay lengths and integrated data logging support monitoring tailored to the application.
- Identify the depth, direction and magnitude of shear movement to better understand changing ground conditions.
- Distinguish localised shear horizons from broader deformation using borehole deviation and cumulative displacement profiles.
- Track changes over time to understand how shear develops, migrates or accelerates.
- Install in open boreholes without grout or resin, with mechanically anchored bays ready to monitor after installation.
- Customise bay lengths to suit the monitoring application.
- Use logged and processed movement data to inform site trigger action responses and ground support decisions.
